Centre for Commercial Law in Asia (CCLA)

The Centre for Commercial Law in Asia (CCLA) was established in 2014 as the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia. Since then, it has been instrumental in driving the ambition of the Singapore Management University (SMU) Yong Pung How School of Law to be the leading centre in Asia for the study of commercial law.

Often in collaboration with other academic institutions and industry partners, CCLA brings together faculty, practitioners, post-doctoral fellows, visiting researchers and students in a symbiotic environment, in the heart of Asia, to provide a global voice for leading scholarship on commercial law in Asia.

Members of CCLA regularly obtain grants and other funding to research cutting-edge developments in important and timely areas of commercial law in Asia. One example is the recently launched Asian Corporate Law Forum (ACLF) which has brought together 10 of Asia’s leading law departments, renowned for their expertise in corporate law and governance, each of which will hold an annual conference that aims to be the preeminent annual event globally for leading scholarship on corporate law and governance in Asia. Another example is the government-supported Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative, a current research project seeking to promote important research discourse on restructuring and corporate insolvency law in Asia and around the world.

CCLA also hosts several lecture series and academic conferences on commercial law facilitating scholarly research and discussion while engaging with law firms, industry stakeholders and other academic institutions. Recent events have featured collaborators and speakers from, amongst other universities, Cambridge University, Chulalongkorn University, City University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, Harvard University, Jindal Global Law School, Melbourne University, Monash University, Nagoya University, National Taiwan University, New York University, Oxford University, Peking University, Queen Mary University of London, Seoul National University, University of Hong Kong, University of Indonesia, University of New South Wales, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, University of Sydney, University of Tokyo, and Zhejiang University.
