About STARI
About Singapore Tax Academy Research Initiative (STARI)
International taxation is undergoing a period of major changes and uncertainty, with key stakeholders like the OECD, UN, US, EU and other leading jurisdictions taking positions that have significant implications for the global international tax landscape. In this environment, there is a strong need for leading international tax research on tax issues relevant to Singapore and the world. At the same time, it is also necessary to build domestic tax research capacity, develop strong academic networks, and ensure that the tax profession gets to learn from the best international tax experts from around the world.
STARI has three main streams of work: 1) Conducting World-Class International Tax Research; 2) Developing Local Academic Capacity in Taxation; and 3) Building Links with International Thought-Leaders in Taxation. STARI aims to both contribute to the international tax academic community and serve the body of tax professionals in Singapore.
In line with its three core focus areas/ main streams of work, STARI aims to produce leading international tax research in a variety of areas such as the study of harmful tax competition, Global Minimum Tax, digital economy, crypto assets and environmental taxation, to give a few examples. As part of the Research Affiliates Programme, STARI will hold Academic Writing Workshops designed to equip tax professionals with the necessary skills to conduct and publish academic research on taxation. The Research Affiliates will also benefit from consultation sessions with the Research Team and present at public seminars, where academic commentators will provide feedback on their work.
In order to build strong international networks and provide the Singapore tax profession with the opportunity to learn from the best international tax experts, STARI will hold an Annual Conference and a number of Visiting Academic Seminars. The STARI Visiting Professorship will bring several of the very best international tax academics to Singapore to deliver keynote lectures to the tax profession.
STARI works closely with its Academic Expert Panel and Technical Expert Panel, comprised of some of the world’s most respected tax professors and leading industry and practice leaders. It is supported by the Tax Academy of Singapore and has numerous partnerships across the Singapore tax profession and academia.
