Venue: The Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong
The Asia-Pacific region holds a pivotal role in the global transition to sustainability. As a diverse and dynamic area, it encompasses both rapidly developing economies and rich ecological landscapes. The region's significance is further underscored by its substantial contributions to global economic growth, technological innovation, and environmental stewardship. Addressing sustainability challenges in the Asia-Pacific context is integral to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as it bridges the gap between economic development and environmental preservation.

Sustainability, and Development: Transforming Pathways in the Asia Pacific Region
Venue: University of Sydney, Australia
The Asia-Pacific region is at a critical point in its sustainability journey, facing major challenges like achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, transitioning justly to clean energy, moving toward a circular economy, ensuring resilient supply chains, and safeguarding human rights. As a rapidly urbanizing hub of the global supply chain, there's an urgent need to improve employment, promote economic growth, and accelerate responsible consumption and production. Climate change and biodiversity loss pose severe threats, necessitating transformative change and a rethink of development pathways. The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework to address these challenges, but progress is alarmingly slow. According to the UN's Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP, 2024), without significant advancements, the SDGs won't be achieved until 2062—32 years behind schedule.
