Comparative Corporate Governance Conference 2019

The Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia, at the School of Law, Singapore Management University (SMU) and the Singapore Academy of Law will convene a conference entitled “Comparative Corporate Governance” from 24-25 January 2019 in Singapore. Adelaide University is a co-host of the conference.

The theme of the conference is “Comparative Corporate Governance: Global and Asian Perspectives”. Scholars, practitioners and regulators working in the fields of corporate law, securities laws, insolvency law and corporate governance are invited to submit proposals addressing the conference theme. In particular, we welcome papers that discuss the following topics:

  • Diversity on boards
  • Takeovers and mechanisms for disciplining corporate management
  • Insolvency reforms and corporate governance
  • Ethics and culture of compliance
  • Effectiveness of soft law mechanism in corporate governance (such as corporate governance codes,
  • ASEAN corporate scorecards)
  • Interdisciplinary scholarship on corporate governance (including law and finance, law and
  • economics)
  • Role of the state in corporate governance in Asia
  • Role of regulators in corporate governance or in supervising financial institutions
  • New frontiers in corporate governance and the impact of technology

The organisers are particularly keen to hear from Asian scholars and young scholars in the field.

Confirmed speakers include the Honourable Justice Chua Lee Ming (Supreme Court, Singapore), Poonam Puri (Osgoode Law School), Christopher Chen (SMU), Jean Du Plessis (Deakin), Mark Findlay (SMU), Suzanne Le Mire (Adelaide), Christopher Symes (Adelaide), Roman Tomasic (South Australia), Wai Yee Wan (SMU), Susan Watson (Auckland), Casey Watters (Nottingham) and Wei Zhang (SMU).

Presenters will be expected to meet their own travel costs and to pay the discounted conference registration fee of S$500 (excluding GST). If you would like to offer a paper, please submit a working title and an abstract (of no more than 500 words) by 30 June 2018 by email to Wai Yee Wan (wywan [at] smu.edu.sg), Christopher Symes (christopher.f.symes [at] adelaide.edu.au) and Casey Watters (Casey.Watters [at] nottingham.edu.cn). Please send the email with the subject heading “Comparative Corporate Governance 2019”. Notifications for acceptances for the conference will be sent by 31 July 2018.

Papers will be selected on the basis of quality, extent of engagement with the conference theme and fit with other papers being presented at the conference. Authors are welcome to offer more than one paper (although only one paper per author will normally be accepted but exceptions will be made if there are multiple co- authors in respect of the paper). Presenters are welcome to submit their papers for consideration for publication by the Australian Journal of Corporate Law, subject to the usual peer review process.
